Chapter One

At 30 years old, I was paralyzed in a loop of boredom. My life, to onlookers, was a pristine mould of the American dream. My husband was a prototypical success story, with a thriving dental practice and a few lavish properties in his name. I was a small time civil suit attorney who led corrupt people to victory, declaring their righteousness through gritted teeth.

Over time, stability became the poison that sapped my verve for life and love. I loved my husband, in spite of his quirks and conformist ways. I had three beautiful children who attended the local private school, treading the path to great things. Our luxurious home hovered in the peaceful confines of an upscale neighbourhood. Our cars were the brunt of all envy whenever we ventured to the other side of town.

But the tiring routine of everyday life pulled me in a downward spiral of fantasy. My eyes festered with wonder whether the grass was truly greener on the other side. Somewhere deep down, I thirsted for more.

My life was an anomaly. I was lucky enough to make it safely out of my Crenshaw childhood home, where drunks and drugged out prostitutes patrolled the streets with glitzy smiles and hopeful lips, smacking for another taste of rum. Sirens blared in the distance, while gang violence tore the city asunder. Liquor stores announced their screeching presence and littered the neighbourhood with cognac. Countless hair supply stores monopolized the local economy, while embittered women scurried to local salons to get their groove back. These delusional women never had a groove to begin with, but sometimes, the lies you tell yourself are your only saviour. Church bells would sound off every morning, and emotive churchgoers would sing high praises, amid the ailing neighbourhood, starved of goodwill and hope.

My mama was born in the hellish depths of the hood, the outskirts of high society. When I was a child, she vowed to never leave the cramped nest of her crime ridden city, unless she won the statistically improbable lottery. Some people gag at the sight of the good life, and she was one of those lowly souls. She buried herself in a lifestyle drugs, alcohol, and promiscuity to drown out her sorrows. She abused me in the process, telling me I would never amount to shit. She turned tricks for a living and said I would meet the same fate if I knew what was best for me. Some people think her pimp was my real daddy, but I never dared to ask her if it was true.

Despite my rough upbringing, there were a few upstanding people in my early life. My older brother Shawn helped forge my path to success. My 10th grade teacher, Mrs. Patterson, motivated me to do great things in life. She was a kind, older black woman with warm chocolate skin and perfectly arranged curls. She had a PhD in English Literature, and she gave me an intent fascination of language.
